Heatons has obtained planning permission for a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on a Green Belt site in Coventry. The site will provide 30MW of electrical capacity in a critical grid location as well as new access infrastructure, landscaping and substantial Biodiversity Net Gains. Heatons successfully argued that the site constitutes ‘Grey Belt’ land and managed the submission of various technical reports relating to noise, ecology, flood risk, fire safety, and the potential for unexploded ordnance (UXO). The small nature of the site necessitated a careful and balanced design to meet numerous planning requirements. The application was preceded by formal pre-application and EIA Screening submissions to the local planning authority.
Overall, this new BESS site on the edge of Coventry will contribute to meeting net-zero targets in the locality by enhancing electrical capacity for renewable energy storage and assist in balancing grid frequency and voltage at times of system stress.
