Heatons Announces Planning Permission for the Recommencement of Mineral Operations at Mugginton Quarry, Derbyshire.

Heatons is excited to announce that planning permission has successfully been granted for the recommencement of mineral operations at Mugginton Quarry in Derbyshire. The Quarry, which was last operational in the 1980s, will now reopen, paving the way for sand extraction and processing to support our client FP McCann’s precast facility at Weston Underwood.

This milestone has been achieved through the collaborative efforts of the project team. Heatons prepared a comprehensive and robust Environmental Statement whilst managing a team of expert technical consultants to demonstrate that mineral extraction at the site can be carried out sustainably. The Statement addressed potential environmental impacts and outlined mitigation measures to ensure that sand extraction would not result in any unacceptable adverse effects on the surrounding area. The rigorous assessment process has ensured that the site is suitable for modern operations while maintaining high environmental standards.

One of the key benefits of the planning permission is that it will allow sand to be sourced directly from Mugginton Quarry for use at the adjacent precast manufacturing facility. The strategic proximity of the Quarry to McCann’s facility will significantly improve operational efficiency. By utilising locally sourced sand, the need to import materials from distant locations is reduced, thereby decreasing the number of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) on the road. This will not only streamline McCann’s production processes but also contribute to lower carbon emissions and reduced impact local road infrastructure, making the entire operation more environmentally and economically sustainable.

The extraction of sand from Mugginton Quarry is anticipated to last for a period of approximately ten years. Once extraction has been completed, the site will undergo comprehensive restoration, which will return the area to an ecologically rich environment. The restoration will feature a combination of grassland, woodland, and the retention of sand faces to provide a mix of habitats for wildlife, including sand martins. This approach ensures that the site will contribute positively by providing ecological benefits long after mineral extraction ceases.
