Tunstead Quarry New Hydrate Plant

14 April 2026

On behalf of our client, Buxton Lime, Heatons have secured prior approval of Derbyshire County Council for a new hydrate plant at Tunstead Quarry. Buxton Lime Ltd seeks to replace its’ existing hydrate planet in order to maintain and futureproof compliance with Environmental Agency’s particulate emissions limits.

The new plant will be 30 meters in height and utilise the best available technology to produce hydrated lime for the UK and export markets. The purpose of the plant is to convert quicklime into hydrated lime, which can be used for a variety of purposes, including the removal of impurities from drinking water and wastewater treatment, acid neutralisation, chemical manufacturing, and various other environmental applications.

A key driver of the proposal is to reduce emissions and enhance the environmental sustainability of mineral operations at the Quarry. Heatons successfully argued that the proposed development comprised ‘permitted development’ under Class B, Part 17 of Schedule 2 of the General Permitted Development Order and a decision was issued within eight days of submitting the application.
